What is coaching?
In the simplest terms, coaching is about connecting point A (where you are) to point B (where you want to be). The coaching relationship is uniquely designed so that you will be energized you to move forward and achieve the personal and professional changes you most desire. A personal coach helps you to create a framework for your goals, a path to achieve them and strategies to overcome obstacles along the way.
What is the coaching relationship like?
The coaching relationship is unlike any other. Imagine if...
- You are heard, supported, and championed.
- You are exploring and creating new possibilities for your life in a non-judgmental environment.
- You are asked thought-provoking questions that spark mindful introspection and new awareness.
- You are allowed to feel and express all your emotions without being told to "cheer-up," "get over it," or "move on."
- You are challenged to stretch, learn and grow without preconceived notions about who you "should be" or what you "should do."
- You are focused and held accountable to your vision and goals.
What beliefs do I hold about coaching and my clients?
I hold that all people are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole, and that they are capable of finding their own answers to whatever challenges they face. My job as coach is to ask questions, listen, and empower rather than instruct and advise. I also believe that all parts of people's lives - their careers, relationships, recreation, personal growth, and finances for example - are interrelated and may be addressed on the way to the client's goal. I coach the whole person to extraordinary results.
What is the difference between coaching and psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy traditionally deals with people who have emotional/behavioral problems and disruptive situations. The purpose is to bring the client to normal function by focusing on the dysfunction. The primary goal is healing.
Coaching, on the other hand, deals with functional people who want to move toward higher function and achieve excellence while creating an extraordinary life. The primary focus is on evolving and manifestation of potential. Healing is often a side affect.
Additionally, coaching is based on the premise that clients are naturally creative, resourceful and whole, and that they are capable of expressing and managing their emotions.
That said, there can be overlap between coaching and therapy, and a well-trained, experienced coach will know when a client needs therapy vs. coaching
Ultimately, it's the expectations and focus that the client brings to the professional relationship that sets the context as coaching or as therapy.
Where and how often does coaching take place?
Our coaching sessions take place over the phone, which allows you the freedom to call from home, the office, while traveling, anywhere! We usually schedule two to four 30- to 60-minute session per month, depending on the package you choose.
What should you expect during and between coaching sessions?
The first step is a thorough discovery session to determine what outcomes you want to achieve through our coaching sessions, uncover your core values, and design our alliance. During our subsequent sessions, I'll ask questions, share observations, and empower you to take bold action. I may request taking actions that will move you toward your goal; or I may suggest inquiries that will prompt deeper insights.
What happens between the sessions? The real learning, growth and action! This is where the true power of coaching is realized. It may happen slowly over time or in a dramatic "aha" moment. You are encourage to initiate email conversation to maintain the momentum between sessions.
If it serves you, you may be asked to complete a coaching call strategy form prior to each call. This form has you take stock of the progress you've made, identify challenges and opportunities, and prepare for the upcoming session.
What happens when you begin working with a coach?
- You take yourself and what you want more seriously.
- You take more effective and focused actions immediately.
- You create momentum to achieve more, be more balanced and develop more powerful skills.
- You set personal goals that are clear and meet your needs.
- You identify and eliminate the barriers that get in the way of the achievement of goals.
- You communicate about what you need and want from others in a more responsible way.
