A New Take On Resolutions: 5 Tips For Creating Joyful Transformation in 2008

New Year's resolutions are almost always centered around well-intentioned quests for self-improvement.  Unfortunately, most resolutions don't last.  Within weeks, days, sometimes even hours, we are back to our old habits.  No lasting change, just the familiar feeling of disappointment, guilt and frustration at our apparent inability to buckle down.

Why does this happen year after year?  Is it because we are weak, lazy or undisciplined?  No!

We ditch our resolutions because we have unconsciously allowed our inner critics to become our personal taskmasters on an ego-fueled quest for perfection.  Ugh... no wonder we give up!

I will give up simple carbs.
I will floss after every meal.
I will stop reading celebrity gossip blogs. (Yes, that could be mine!)

There's nothing inherently wrong with these resolutions but do you sense an attitude of all-or-nothing rigidity, an air of judgment, a generally feeling of this-is-not-going-to-be-fun?  That's the energy coming from a resolution chosen by an inner critic.

The inner critic is pretty clear that we are inadequate the way we are today, so it's "time you get your butt in gear, buster!"

Who wants to be subjected to that sort of judgment?  Not me!

But it doesn't have to be that way.  Creating lasting personal transformation, which is the purpose of a resolution, can be enriching, joyful and satisfying.

My Journey Of Transformation
Journal & Contemplation Cards

Buy your copies by Friday, Jan 18 before the price increases!

"Learning in action" has been one of my mottos for the last few months, because without it I tend to create "paralysis by analysis" and that gets you nowhere!!

So, thanks to learning in action about working with online retailers and setting profit margins that are actually profitable (oops!), I will be increasing the price of the journal and contemplation cards.

But don't worry, there's still time to buy your copies at the current price.  Just do your online shopping by Friday, January 18 to receive the current price.  Click here to begin your shopping!

Melissa Grossman's 31 Days Of Self-Congratulations blog is dedicated to turning the New Year's tradition of repentance and penance on its head, a rebellion against the ubiquitous use of negative reinforcements to force self-improvements upon ourselves, a.k.a. New Year's Resolutions. [This is a girl after my heart!]  Instead of spending the first shiny-penny-new days of 2008 vowing to fix what we don't like about ourselves, she challenges us to highlight the good stuff from 2007, as in what we already like about ourselves. Or, what we did well. Or, where we made headway, even if only by inching towards our pie-in-the-sky goals.

Her challenge in a nutshell: Name one positive thing about yourself every day between January 1st to 31st--that's the challenge [and yes, you can start today].  No self-congratulation is too small. "Fine, so you didn't open a schoolhouse for young girls in Botswana, but you did start flossing more regularly and even brought a canvas bag to the grocery store when you remembered." [I'm still working on both of those!]

Will you meet me over there?  I hope to be reading some of your self-congratulations very soon!

*paying it forward

One of my intentions from 2007 was to begin paying it forward.  In the spirit of recognizing the kindness and good fortune that comes my way, I decided to donate 5% of my profits each quarter to a Global Giving project.

I made my very first donation on January 2!  This means that a portion of what you spent on coaching with me and/or your purchase of my journal or contemplation cards between is now helping Relief International's health clinic in the Zam Zam refugee camp in North Darfur.  They are training indigenous doctors, midwives, and community health workers to provide services to more than 50,000 people.

I believe every little bit counts.  Will you contribute in a way that work for you?  Thoughts, prayers, nickels and twenties all make a difference!
