*welcome
March 2008 l Volume 1 l Issue 3 l a monthly publication by erin curran coaching Hello!
Here it is, the last day of March and I ask myself "where did the time go?!"
I don't know about you but March went really fast for me! This got me wondering - why does it sometimes feel like time slips through our fingers? What I realized was that the answer relates to a breakdown in my commitment to certain actions that are necessary for me to realize my vision, AND that the commitment breakdown was caused by internal obstacles (thoughts and beliefs). The article below shares a process I took myself through in an effort to renew my commitment to my vision and help me regain control of my time! I hope you find it useful. ;-) Pensively, though with a smile as the sun shines through my window, ![]() Erin Curran, CPCC

Renew Your Commitment To Your Vision - Examining Why We Break Our Commitments and What to Do About It com *mit * ment -noun 1. A pledge or promise to do something in the future 2. The state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action Do you notice yourself breaking the commitments that you know are necessary actions for realizing your vision? Perhaps you think, "I'll do it tomorrow, another day or just later." You tell yourself, "It won't make that much of a difference." I'm sure many of us can relate to that train of thought, but we know that if we are being honest with ourselves, these thoughts are just ways we self-sabotage. And when we do that, our vision suffers and remains just a possibility rather than a reality. The manifestation of a vision requires honoring commitments. So what is it about honoring commitments that can be so challenging? What gets in the way? Internal obstacles get in the way. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of not doing it perfectly. Fear of making mistakes. Fear of change. The list of internal obstacles could go on and on... If you can relate, let's do a little self-coaching... First, describe the vision you want to manifest for yourself and/or the world. _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ Next, describe why this vision is important to you. What core values are you honoring by committing to this vision? _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ On a scale from 1-10 (low to high), how much does this vision align with your values? _____ Now, look at the commitments you've made to yourself that relate to this vision (these may be action steps, tasks, sub-goals or intentions) and notice which ones you have not held yourself accountable to. List them below. _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ For each of the items above, how necessary are these commitments to realizing your vision? Use a scale from 1-10 and make your notes above. Circle those that you rated at 7 or higher. [Those that you rated lower, consider dropping. They're probably just busy work tasks you created for yourself and may become additional distractions.] For all the commitments that you circled, list the thoughts and beliefs that stop you from honoring them. Do this for each commitment separately. (You may need more space to capture everything.) _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ Next, ask yourself, "Are these thoughts or beliefs really true?" "What evidence do I have that these thoughts/beliefs are not true?" Make lists of the evidence. _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ Now cross out the limiting beliefs that you previously recorded, and ask yourself "What will I need to think and believe to transform my inaction to committed action?" That is, what new thoughts and beliefs will help you honor your commitments rather than avoid them? _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ Now I ask you a very important question - will you cultivate these new beliefs and thought patterns? Yes or no? _________ Finally, declare aloud or in writing below your renewed commitments and the new thoughts and beliefs you will cultivate in support of these commitments. _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ Okay, now go to it with renewed vigor! Today is a day that you will honor your commitment to your vision. And let me know how it goes and what you discovered from this self-coaching exercise.
